HireVue Interview Questions: What It Actually Asks

Every page promising the ten questions everyone gets on HireVue is selling a list that cannot exist. The question set is assembled per role — by HireVue's psychologists from a job analysis in its AI-scored interviews, or by the employer from the same requisition your posting was written from. Your questions are predictable. Just not from a list.

Quick Answer

  • What HireVue is: a hiring platform, not an interview style. Most candidates meet it as a one-way recorded interview of roughly four to eight questions, 15 to 30 minutes
  • Why no fixed list exists: in its AI-scored interviews HireVue keeps a separate question set per competency, and which competencies you face comes from a job analysis of your specific role
  • What gets scored: the transcript of what you said. HireVue states its AI does not assess facial expressions, body language, your background or your tone of voice
  • Who scores it: an algorithm, a recruiter watching the recording, or both — that is an employer setting you cannot see
  • What to prepare: six to eight competencies pulled out of your own posting, each with one specific story attached
  • Answer shape: a situation, what you did, what happened. Named systems, named numbers, named people

Why There Is No Fixed List of HireVue Questions

The mechanics are documented, and they rule the list out. HireVue writes that it has developed a separate AI model and set of questions for each competency it measures, that there are 19 interview-based competencies it can cover, and that customers using its modular assessments work with its industrial and organizational psychologists to conduct a job analysis determining which competencies a specific role requires. That job analysis then guides which content goes into the interview.

So the unit of assembly is the competency, not the question. A branch banking role and a graduate analyst role draw from the same library and come out sharing almost nothing. On HireVue's own numbers — over 40 million video interviews and 200 million assessments across more than 1,100 customers — a universal top-ten list would have to survive 1,100 separate job analyses. HireVue also advertises more than a thousand job-specific interview guides vetted and maintained by those same psychologists, which is the opposite of one list.

The useful consequence: the input to that job analysis is the job. You are holding the same description the analysis was built from. Pull the competencies out of it and you are preparing against the actual source, which is the entire method in our guide to preparing from the job description.

What Gets Scored, and Who Scores It

Two configurations exist and you usually cannot tell which one you are in.

When an algorithm scores it

HireVue's AI-scored interviews work from the transcript. Speech is converted to text by a third-party transcription system, a language model reads the text, and the response is scored against a behaviorally anchored rating scale with five levels from novice to expert. HireVue is explicit that the AI relies only on what the candidate said and does not assess facial expressions, body language, background and surroundings, or tone of voice.

Two details matter for how you answer. HireVue reports an average correlation of 0.69 between its scoring algorithms and expert human raters across 99,411 evaluated responses — so the score approximates a trained interviewer, imperfectly. And it says the model reads words in context, which makes the interview harder to game by working particular phrases into an answer. Salting your response with vocabulary lifted from the posting is not a strategy. Describing what you actually did is.

When a recruiter scores it

Plenty of HireVue on-demand interviews are simply recorded and watched. In that configuration your reviewer is a person working through the employer's interview guide, with the rating guidelines and the five-level scale on screen beside your video — HireVue recommends those guidelines be switched on. The rubric is the same shape; the reader is human.

One piece of legacy advice to retire: HireVue announced in January 2021 that it had removed the facial-analysis component from its assessments, saying language analysis had become the predictive part. Most of the coaching still circulating about smiling at the lens and holding eye contact with the camera descends from that era. Look presentable, be audible, and remember that the artifact being judged is what you said.

The Competency-to-Question Map

These eight are competencies HireVue names publicly, in its explainability statement and its candidate FAQ; its interview library holds 19. The prompt wording below is illustrative. The shape is what is stable, because each prompt exists to elicit behavior against one named competency.

How a competency turns into a question
CompetencyWhat the prompt sounds likeWhat you need ready
CommunicationTell me about a time you explained something complicated to someone without your background. One explanation you gave, and who the audience was
Problem solvingDescribe a problem where your first read turned out to be wrong.A diagnosis you revised, and what changed it
AdaptabilityTell me about a time priorities shifted in the middle of something.A specific change, and the decision you made within days of it
Team orientationGive me an example of working with someone whose approach differed from yours.A colleague you disagreed with, and what the team shipped anyway
Willingness to learnTell me about something you had to get up to speed on quickly. What you did in the first week of not knowing
Customer serviceDescribe a time a customer was unhappy about something that was not your fault. One recovery, including the part you could not fix
InitiativeTell me about something you started that nobody asked you to.Something you noticed, and what you did next
ConscientiousnessDescribe how you track commitments when a lot is going on.The system you genuinely use, named

Notice what the right-hand column is not: a script. Six to eight episodes from your own history, one per competency, cover a HireVue interview better than thirty memorized answers, because the wording moves and the competency does not.

Working It From a Real Posting

Here is the mapping done by hand, on a posting of the kind HireVue is most often deployed against.

The posting (excerpt)

“Client Service Associate, Retail Banking. You will be the first point of contact for branch customers, resolve account issues at the counter, refer customers to specialists for lending and investment needs, follow compliance procedures on every transaction, and support colleagues through peak periods. Requirements: 1+ year customer-facing experience, comfort with digital banking tools.”

Four sentences of posting, six predictable prompts
Phrase in the postingCompetency it impliesThe prompt it produces
“first point of contact for branch customers”Customer serviceTell me about a customer who arrived already frustrated.
“resolve account issues at the counter”Problem solvingDescribe sorting out a problem with incomplete information.
“refer customers to specialists”CommunicationTell me about explaining an option someone had not asked for.
“follow compliance procedures on every transaction”ConscientiousnessDescribe following a procedure when skipping it would have been faster.
“support colleagues through peak periods”Team orientationTell me about covering for someone under pressure.
“comfort with digital banking tools”Willingness to learnTell me about a system you had to learn fast.

None of those six appear on a generic HireVue question list. All six fall out of four sentences you already have. That is the whole trick, and it becomes available the moment you read the posting as a competency document rather than a wish list.

What a strong answer looks like against the actual rubric

HireVue publishes the rating scale for its Communication competency. Its upper anchors describe a message that is well organized, states its purpose and importance, arrives in a logical sequence, is tailored to the audience, and whose speaker confirms it was understood. Answer the third row above twice.

“Tell me about explaining an option someone had not asked for”

Asserts the competency

“I would say communication is one of my real strengths. I always make sure customers understand all their options, and people tell me I am easy to talk to and very patient with them.”

Demonstrates the behaviors the rubric names

“A customer came in to close his savings account because he was angry about a monthly fee. Before processing it, I told him why the fee had applied — his balance had dropped under the threshold in March — and that we had an account with no fee at his balance. I wrote both numbers on a slip so he could compare them, then asked him to tell me back which one he wanted, so I knew I had not confused him. He kept the money with us and moved across that morning.”

Why the second one scores: purpose stated first, events in sequence, tailored to the listener, understanding explicitly confirmed. The first answer claims the competency. The second performs it.

A situation, then your actions, then the outcome lands on those anchors almost automatically — which is our own read of why the STAR method holds up here, not a claim HireVue makes. Keep the situation to a sentence. The scoring interest is in what you did.

What Varies by Employer, and the June 2026 Change

The interview you sit is a configuration. HireVue documents the main switches; the employer picks them.

  • Preparation time: zero to five minutes, or unlimited. HireVue recommends no restriction with a one-minute minimum. Its candidate walkthrough describes 30 seconds to review and up to three minutes to record — treat that as one configuration, not the rule
  • Retries: a yes or no switch. HireVue recommends unlimited, but do not count on one until the screen offers it
  • Practice questions: standard, unlimited, not recorded or reviewed. Use them until the format is boring
  • Feedback report: HireVue recommends employers enable a candidate report showing what was measured and how you scored, and supplies them a template email offering it. Ask the recruiter
  • Accommodations: HireVue's candidate FAQ says you can request them from the recruiter, including receiving the questions in advance for extra practice time
  • AI opt-out: HireVue states that candidates who opt out take the same assessment, are rated manually against the same scales, and are not excluded from the process. Whether the option reaches you is the employer's call

If the position is based in Illinois, the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act requires an employer using AI to analyze video interviews to tell you beforehand, explain how the AI works and the general types of characteristics it uses to evaluate applicants, and obtain your consent. On request, your interview must be deleted within 30 days. Reading that notice is the fastest way to learn which configuration you are actually in.

It may now talk back

On 18 June 2026 HireVue launched AI Interviewer, a voice-based product it describes as conducting dynamic, two-way voice interviews with every applicant, focused on job-specific skills, with responses that can be scored against validated rubrics. Some candidates are now meeting a conversation rather than a recording button.

That does not change the preparation, but it raises the cost of the wrong preparation. A memorized paragraph survives a one-way recording. It does not survive a two-way conversation, where the next thing said to you depends on what you just said. Prepare the evidence — the episode, the numbers, the decision you made — and let the wording assemble itself, which is the same discipline that carries a recruiter phone screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common HireVue interview questions?

There is no fixed set. In its AI-scored interviews HireVue maintains a separate question set for each competency it measures, and which competencies appear in your interview comes from a job analysis of that specific role. Two candidates at the same employer, applying to different jobs, get different prompts. Prepare by competency, not by list.

Does HireVue analyze your face, body language or tone of voice?

No. HireVue's 2025 explainability statement says its AI relies only on what the candidate said, and does not assess facial expressions, body language, background and surroundings, or tone of voice. HireVue announced in January 2021 that facial analysis had been removed from its assessments.

How many questions are in a HireVue interview and how long does it take?

HireVue describes a typical AI-scored assessment as 4 to 6 recorded video questions plus 2 to 3 game questions, taking 15 to 25 minutes. Its candidate FAQ says most video assessments include five to eight questions and run under 20 to 30 minutes. Allow 45 minutes to be safe.

How long do you get to answer each HireVue question?

HireVue's candidate walkthrough describes 30 seconds to review each question and up to three minutes to record, with a button to finish early. Preparation time is an employer setting, though: anywhere from zero to five minutes, or unlimited. Read the timing on screen before you start.

Can you retake a HireVue answer?

Sometimes. Retries are a yes or no switch the employer controls, and HireVue recommends allowing unlimited retries. Unrecorded practice questions before the real interview are standard, and you can take as many as you like. Never assume you get a second recording until the screen offers one.

Is a human or an AI scoring my HireVue interview?

It depends on the employer's configuration. Some recordings are scored by HireVue's models, others are simply watched and rated by a recruiter using the supplied rating guidelines. You often cannot tell which. Either way the questions were assembled from the same per-role competencies.

Can you get HireVue interview questions in advance?

HireVue's candidate FAQ says you can request accommodations from the recruiter or hiring team, and that receiving the interview questions in advance for extra practice time is one of the options. It is a request to the employer, not a setting you can switch on yourself.

Next Steps

If the recording is due tonight, the order matters more than the hours. Do not skip the mapping step: everything after it depends on having the right six competencies rather than someone else's ten questions.
